Andrew Martens Registers Four Points In Shootout Loss To Idaho
ONTARIO, Calif. – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, fell to the Idaho Steelheads in the shootout, 6-5, on Sunday evening before a crowd of 6,635 fans at Citizens Business Bank Arena.
Steelheads center Matt McKnight claimed the first goal of the night with a wrist shot that beat Ontario goaltender Mike Zacharias on his stick side at 15:43 in the opening period. Defenseman Dustin Friesen and center Tyler Spurgeon claimed the assists.
Greg Hogeboom put the Reign on the board at 4:25 in the second period during a man advantage. Defenseman Mike Egener fired off a one-timer that went wide and bounced off the boards and was picked up by Hogeboom, who flipped it past Idaho goaltender Rejean Beauchemin. Defenseman Andrew Martens also registered an assist on the play.
Idaho center Marty Flichel reclaimed the lead for his club with a one-timer that crossed the goal line at 14:21 on a power play. Dustin Friesen picked up his second assist of the game and left wing Mark Derlago registered his first.
Tony Voce scored the equalizer 34 seconds into the final period. His wrist shot sailed past Beauchemin off assists from right wing Geoff Walker and Andrew Martens during a power play. Less than three minutes later, Andrew Martens notched his third point of the game and put his club up, 3-2, with the Reign’s third power play goal. Martens threaded a one-timer through traffic and straight into the back of the net with an assist from Mike Egener, who marked his second assist of the game on the goal.
Mark Derlago scored the first of three unanswered power play goals at 4:41 and Marty Flichel registered his second assist of the night on the play. Dustin Friesen brought his game total to three points at 10:35, when Mark Derlago snapped a pass across the slot from the right circle to his stick and he threw the puck past Zacharias. Evan Barlow also recorded an assist.
Matt McKnight gave the Steelheads a two-goal lead and netted Idaho’s third power play tally at 11:00. McKnight threw the puck over Zacharias, who was knocked down in the crease.
Just under two minutes later, Tony Voce scored his second goal of the night when he redirected a slap shot from defenseman David Walker past Beauchemin at 12:55. Geoff Walker claimed the last goal in regulation at 17:42 with a backhand shot that slid past Beauchemin’s glove. Andrew Martens registered his fourth point of the night with one of the assists and Mike Zacharias recorded his second professional point with the second. With the score still tied at five goals when the clock hit zero, the clubs headed into overtime.
The five-minute overtime session yielded no goals, and both teams were blanked in the shootout through four rounds, until Idaho’s fifth shooter, Marty Flichel, beat Zacharias with a wrist shot. Idaho claimed the win with a final score of Steelheads 6, Reign 5 (SO).
