ONTAIRO WINS SECOND STRAIGHT IN ALASKA

Kellen Briggs and Jeff Corey Come Up Big Again

ANCHORAGE, AK – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL’s Los Angeles Kings, beat the Alaska Aces 4-3 on Saturday.

Last night’s overtime hero, Jeff Corey, picked up right where he left off, as he scored just 1:06 into the game.  With the Reign on the power play, Dusty Collins fed Eric Doyle at the blue line and he blasted a slap shot through traffic.  Corey scooped up the long rebound and snapped a quick shot into the net for the 1-0 lead.  Wes Goldie returned the favor for Alaska.  Goldie one-timed a rocket from the point to tie it up at 11:39 of the first.

Goldie struck again in the second.  Scott Howes faked a shot and sent a cross-ice pass to Goldie, who beat Kellen Briggs on the blocker side to give the Aces a 2-1 lead.  The Reign battled back courtesy of special teams play.  On the power play, David Walker fired a slap shot that rebounded right onto the stick of Lane Caffaro and he buried it for the second Reign power play goal of the game, tying it at 2-2.

Corey tallied the Reign’s first shorthanded goal of the season with 28 seconds left in the second period.  Collins fired a stretch-pass to a streaking Corey, who skated in all alone and went five-hole on Aces netminder, Gerald Coleman to re-take the lead, 3-2.

Jon Francisco extended the Reign lead to 4-2 with his fourth goal of the season at 5:58 of the third period.  Brett O’Malley found Francisco behind the Aces defense with a long pass.  Francisco made a nice move and went top shelf with a backhander over Coleman’s blocker.
Alaska pulled within one on the power play.  A shot by Goldie went in off of Maxime Tanguay’s skate.  However, officials allowed to goal to stand because Tanguay hadn’t made a distinct kicking motion when he redirected the puck.

Alaska pulled Coleman in the final minute of the game and even had a 6-on-4 opportunity after an Ontario penalty with seven seconds left, but the Reign weathered the attack and held on for a 4-3 win.

Coleman took the loss for Alaska with 14 saves on 18 shots, while Briggs earned the win for Ontario with 31 saves on 34 shots.  Briggs has come up big, making 69 saves in 73 shots in the two games in Alaska.

Tonight’s three stars were:

1) ONT – Kellen Briggs
2) AK – Wes Goldie
3) ONT – Jon Francisco
