Victoria Sweeps Ontario In Back-To-Back Series
VICTORIA, B.C. – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, was shut out by the Victoria Salmon Kings, 5-0, on Saturday evening before a crowd of 3,768 at Save-On Foods Memorial Centre.
The Salmon Kings took an early lead over the Reign for the second consecutive night, opening scoring only 1:40 into the first period. Center Olivier Latendresse claimed the first goal of the night with assists from defensemen Tim Wedderburn and Patrick Coulombe. At 12:30, Wedderburn gave the Salmon Kings a 2-0 lead and picked up his second point of the night and first goal of the season with assists from Latendresse, who also picked up his second point of the game on the play, and forward Randall Gelech. The clubs headed into the second period with Ontario looking to get on the board.
Only 20 seconds after Reign right wing Jon Rheault headed to the box for a slashing minor, center Dirk Southern took advantage of the power play when he sniped the top corner of the net over Ontario netminder Curtis Darling’s right blocker. Defenseman Jimmy Sharrow and left wing Chad Painchaud registered the assists, and Victoria extended their lead, 3-0.
Patrick Coulombe scored the fourth unanswered Salmon Kings goal at 17:01 in the second period. Right wing Wes Goldie took a shot on goal that was saved by Darling, but the rebound was picked up by Coulombe, who threw the puck up high and over the goal line.
Forward Andy Brandt extended the Salmon Kings lead to five goals only nine seconds into the power play that resulted from the assessment of two minor penalties to Reign defenseman Mike Egener at 18:16 in the third period. Center Adam Taylor and left wing Scott Howes picked up the assists on the final goal of the game, and Victoria won the match with a final score of Salmon Kings 5, Reign 0.
