Idaho’s Win Splits Three-Game Road Series, Teams to Meet Again Saturday
BOISE, Idaho – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, fell to the Idaho Steelheads, 2-1, on Friday evening at Qwest Arena before 3,478 fans.
Defenseman David Walker and left wing Adam Huxley dropped the gloves as soon as the puck hit the ice. Both players landed several hits before the linesmen separated them and handed them each a five-minute fighting major.
Right wing Marty Flichel opened scoring in the game at 3:48 in the first period. Center Matt McKnight threw a pass over to Flichel from the left face-off circle, and Flichel fired the puck into the open side of the net to give the Steelheads a 1-0 lead. Defenseman Bryan Miller also picked up an assist on the play.
Defenseman Cody Lampl released a slap shot from the middle of the right circle and the puck slid under Darling towards the goal line. Reign forward Michael Pelech streaked towards the net and cleared the puck down the ice. The officials waved off the goal that would have extended the Steelheads’ lead to two, ruling that the puck did not cross the goal line.
Left wing John Swanson extended Idaho’s lead at 15:02 in the middle frame when he took a shot on goal from a sharp angle to the left of the net that Ontario net minder Curtis Darling couldn’t get in front of. Right wing Ashton Rome and defenseman Guillaume Monast claimed the assists on Swanson’s goal, which put the Steelheads up 2-0.
Defenseman Jon Landry claimed what would be the only goal of the night for the Reign at 4:03 in the final period. Landry’s unassisted goal cut Idaho’s lead to one, but wasn’t enough to catch the Steelheads before time expired in regulation. Idaho claimed the win in the match, with a final score of Steelheads 2, Reign 1.
