Lenes, Hogeboom Score Three Points Each
BOISE, Idaho – The Ontario Reign, proud affiliate of the NHL Los Angeles Kings, defeated the Idaho Steelheads, 5-3, on Saturday evening at Qwest Arena. The final match in a three-game road series saw 3,531 fans in the stands. Peter Lenes and Greg Hogeboom both registered three point games with one goal and two assists each.
Idaho claimed a 2-0 lead in the first 3:21 of the opening period. The first Steelheads goal was unassisted from left wing John Swanson at 1:57. Left wing Adam Huxley registered the second Idaho goal at 3:21. Huxley took a shot on goal from the center of the right circle and his attempt barely slid over the goal line past Reign goaltender Curtis Darling. Center Matt McKnight picked up the assist.
The second period was all about the Reign, who scored four goals to overtake Idaho. Left wing Peter Lenes scored his eleventh goal of the season and put the Reign on the board at 5:13. Lenes picked up his own rebound after Idaho net minder Rejean Beauchemin made the initial save and put the puck into the top left corner of the net with a backhand shot. Defenseman Shawn Germain and forward Greg Hogeboom notched the assists. At 12:09, Tim Kraus capitalized on a Reign power play and scored the equalizer, a wrist shot that went up and over Beauchemin, with assists from Greg Hogeboom and Peter Lenes.
Right wing Mike Howe scored the first of two consecutive 5-on-3 power play goals for Ontario at 14:26. Howe redirected defenseman David Walker’s shot from the slot past Beauchemin. Center Robert Pearce also claimed an assist on the goal. Just over a minute later, Greg Hogeboom notched his third point of the game with a wrist shot that just barely made it over the goal line. Peter Lenes, who marked his third point of the night on the play, and defenseman Andrew Martens registered the assists on the second 5-on-3 power play goal for the Reign.
Center Jon Francisco snapped the puck behind Beauchemin from the left side of the net and scored the fifth unanswered goal for Ontario at 6:36 in the final period. Mike Howe and Robert Pearce scored their second points of the game with the assists on the goal.
During a power play with only 1:25 left in regulation, left wing Evan Barlow finally answered back while Idaho’s Beauchemin was on the bench for the extra attacker. The goal proved to be too little, too late for Idaho, who was unable to score again for the remainder of play. Ontario took the win with a final score of Reign 5, Steelheads 3.
